Our Philosophy

Key Principles

At Khalsa School, our aim is to provide an excellent quality of education for all our students. It is our firm belief that every student can learn regardless of their circumstance. Living up to this ideal requires that we at Khalsa School have a holistic approach to education that will stand the test of time. In keeping with our principle of lifelong learning, we understand that approaches to education will evolve, both as the world changes and as we continually encounter new and best pedagogical practices.

Developing ethical students who excel in and outside the classroom and who are grounded in the traditions and heritages from which they come, requires rooting our educational approach in several key principles. These principles include providing an education that is globally relevant, exposing our students to interdisciplinary learning, teaching curricula that is ‘concept based and competency driven,’ encouraging learning that is student centered, and constantly reinforcing the importance of a growth mindset while using the Government of British Columbia’s Redesigned Curricula.

  • Global Relevance: We seek to provide an education that has global relevance. We hope that at Khalsa School, students will learn about what it means to be a global citizen. They will learn about and accept the diversity of the world around them and see themselves as a full part of it.
  • Interdisciplinary Learning: Our approach to education recognizes that knowledge is valuable, and that learning does not recognize discipline specific boundaries, it occurs across various fields of knowledge. We feel that what a student learns in English may add to and enhance their learning in the humanities and concepts in mathematics may also resonate in science. In encouraging interdisciplinary thinking, we hope to cultivate deep and critical thinkers who understand, bridge, and think critically about the various fields of human knowledge.
  • Concept Based & Competency Driven: Reinforced by the Government of British Columbia’s new curriculum we seek to provide an education that is ‘concept based and competency driven.’ This exposes students to the primary ideas and concepts in their respective subjects. A concept based curriculum allows and facilitates interdisciplinary thinking and also encourages the intellectual engagement and understanding in addition to discipline specific skills. A competency driven curriculum stimulates development of personal professional and social competencies essential for life and work in the 21st  century.
