Welcome To Khalsa School Old Yale Road (Elementary)
It gives me a great pleasure to serve as Principal of Khalsa School Elementary, Old Yale Road Campus. It is the largest Sikh elementary school with all the latest facilities that are required for children to learn and feel safe and welcomed. It is an exciting place for children from Day Care to 7th Grade to learn and grow!
Every morning when students, teachers, and parents enter in the building, they are greeted in the foyer by my staff and I. Daily Hukamnama (the order of the day from Sri Guru Granth Sahib) with its translation is displayed on the screen, serving as a blessing for all.
We believe in teaching the whole child: nurturing and guiding each one to reach their academic, social and physical and spiritual potential We strive to create an environment where students feel safe, comfortable, and respected.
Our School is mandated to follow the B.C. Ministry of Education Curriculum. Along with core subjects of Language arts (reading and writing), math, science, and social studies, students learn Punjabi, Gurmat, Santhya, Sikh History, Kirtan, Tabla, and Gatka on daily basis. The staff at Khalsa School is energetic, hard-working and creative. We promote collaboration between staff and students. We take great pride in our parental involvement and support. Our Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) has done an excellent job this year and has made a big difference in the lives of our students as they have helped in supporting our educational workshops and field trips.
Our campus has the distinction of being named as the ‘Home of Spelling Bee Champions’ given that BC Regional Spelling Bee Championship is hosted in our beautiful auditorium. Our students from Grade 1-7 have consistently won the BC Regional Championship for the past 4 years and have won the Spelling Bee of Canada Championship two times. Our school has been ranked in the top 10 schools in Surrey by the Fraser Institute and since 2012 has been ranked in the top 10 of BC’s National Math League Contest.
I believe that every child has leadership skills, and it is up to us to encourage them to utilise their skills in a constructive and positive way. We have strong student leaders in the Student Council who take pride in involving the whole school in fund raising for those in need.
Our students have achieved distinction in the Regional Science Fairs conducted by the Fraser Institute, the UBC Science Challenge, the Math Centrum competition conducted by UBC, Elmacon, National Geographic Challenge as well as many other open competitions. In sports, our athletic director has inspired children to compete with excellence and maintain a high level of sportsmanship.
