Khalsa Secondary School (KSS), which opened in the fall of 2014, is home to over 300 energetic students in grades 8 - 12. We offer an exceptional flex program that mixes the best of linear (yearlong) and semester based courses. Our Humanities classes combine English, Social Studies and Art in an interdisciplinary approach that maximizes learning. Likewise, our STEM classes blend Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in an exciting and engaging way. Our courses intentionally allow students to take their learning to the next level, integrating it with real-world situations, applying it to a potential career, and using it to develop leadership and life skills. Student learning opportunities are continually expanding and improving based on student interest and parent input.
A small high school can have big advantages. Our teachers know our students by name. They are mentors who inspire excellence, discuss hard issues with sincerity, and care deeply. KSS teachers strive to create a community of respect, honour and fun. There are plenty of opportunities for student involvement. Think “Big Fish, Small Pond.” This means students have a strong chance to be a star basketball player, Student Council executive officer, lead role in a drama production, perform Kirtan during Gurdwara assemblies, or have a top academic ranking, all while being surrounded by supportive classmates and teachers. Our small size means that no one falls through the cracks and someone is there to help when needed.
High school students are faced with many decisions related to post-secondary learning and career paths. Navigating the routes and requirements for post-secondary admission can be complicated and confusing. Students are provided in-class instruction and one-on-one guidance in this area as they make decisions relating to their future plans. This allows are students to feel less anxious about where they might be heading, and to set appropriate goals for the future. This support includes:
Thanks to the generosity of our community, KSS graduations are eligible to receive over a dozen school specific scholarships. Scholarship criteria are distributed to grade 12 students in December of their graduation year. KSS also supports student applications for the District/Authority Awards. This provincial program recognizes graduating B.C. students for excellence in their chosen area of interest or strength. Winners receive a $1250 scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition. In the 2015-2016 school year, two of our grade 12 students received this award for their advanced Tabla skills. We annually nominate one KSS student for the BC Excellence $5000 Scholarships. Winners will have demonstrated community service, both inside and outside their schools, and shown aptitude and commitment to their chosen career paths.
KSS students are automatically eligible to receive BC Achievement Scholarships as well as University Entrance Scholarships. Please note, the provincial scholarships based on the highest provincial exam scores in grades 10-12 have been phased out and are no longer available to any BC student.
In addition, we notify students of other scholarships, bursaries, and awards as we become aware of them.
